Justice Aisha Shujune Muhammad

Justice Aisha Shujune Muhammad, a prominent legal professional from the Maldives, was appointed to the Supreme Court of the Maldives in September 2019. Before her appointment to the Supreme Court, she practiced privately, held various significant executive positions, and broke new ground as one of the Maldives' first female judges when appointed as a Judge of the Civil Court in July 2007.

Justice Shujune Muhammad is deeply committed to human rights and good governance, demonstrated by her extensive work with civil society organizations and participation in numerous state initiatives. She has significantly contributed to the legal sector in the Maldives, serving on the Executive Committee of the Bar Council, the Judicial Service Commission, and holding board positions at the Judicial Academy of Maldives and the Faculty of Sharia & Law at the Maldives National University.

Internationally, Justice Shujune Muhammad has been a key figure on the United Nations Subcommittee on the Prevention of Torture (SPT), where she served as Vice Chairperson for Jurisprudence and Rapporteur from 2011 to 2018. Following her re-election to the SPT in 2021, she now serves as Vice Chairperson for National Preventive Mechanisms.
